Financial Participation

In the 1960s and 1970s trade unions were active in the political debate pushing for investment funds, which would have been controlled by workers’ representatives and used for investments in business activities. The proposed funds were however not implemented and the political debate of employee financial participation died down in the 1980’s. Trade unions currently take an indifferent attitude towards employee financial participation.

Whereas there was little focus on employee financial participation by politicians or social partners in the 1990’s, this changed at the turn of the century, with the state giving considerable support to employee participation for about a decade. Trade unions support these political initiatives to a certain extent, though in certain areas their traditional reticence towards participation models remains. Employers’ organisations in Denmark are also sceptical towards employee financial participation.1
