There has been a debate about workers’ financial participation in Sweden since the 1960s. The incidence of participation schemes is above average by European comparison.
Workers’ financial participation schemes are used in companies as a way of retaining employees, and especially specialists, or promoting the recruitment of new employees.1 Although employee share ownership schemes are less widespread than profit-sharing schemes, by European comparison both forms of workers’ financial participation are well established in Sweden.
